Aitutaki.com Brand Identity Case Study

A strategic brand identity project demonstrating how thoughtful branding can elevate how a business presents itself and connect with its audience.

Project Overview

Aitutaki.com is a travel brand dedicated to showcasing the beauty and experience of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands.

While the existing brand captured the relaxed, friendly spirit often associated with island life, it no longer reflected the direction the business was evolving toward. The client was repositioning the brand to appeal to a more premium travel audience, requiring a visual identity that felt more refined, elevated, and aligned with the level of experience being offered.

This project focused on evolving the brand identity and developing the design direction for a new website experience, ensuring the brand could present itself with greater clarity, sophistication, and consistency.

This brand identity case study explores how the visual identity and website design direction helped reposition the brand for a more premium travel audience.

The Starting Point

The existing brand for Aitutaki.com embraced the relaxed, laid-back energy of island travel. It felt friendly, vibrant, and informal, reflecting the spirit of the Cook Islands.

However, as the business evolved, the brand no longer aligned with the level of experience the client wished to communicate.

The new direction required a brand identity that would:

  • feel more refined and premium

  • appeal to a higher-end travel audience

  • retain a sense of place without feeling overly casual

  • translate effectively across digital experiences

The challenge was to evolve the brand in a way that felt elevated while still honouring the destination it represents.

The Brief

The goal was to reposition the brand so that it reflected a more premium travel offering.

The new identity needed to:

  • elevate the perception of the brand

  • evoke the calm luxury of island travel

  • create a more sophisticated digital presence

  • support the design direction for the new website

Rather than introducing unnecessary complexity, the design approach focused on refinement and clarity, ensuring the brand would feel timeless, confident, and aligned with the experience being offered.

A Strategy-Led Foundation

Before developing the visual identity, the project focused on defining the key characteristics of the brand.

This included clarifying:

  • How the destination should be perceived by travellers

  • the tone and personality of the brand

  • How the brand could communicate premium travel experiences

  • the visual cues that would subtly evoke island travel without feeling cliché

Establishing these foundations ensured that the updated identity would support the client’s repositioning while remaining authentic to the destination.

The Brand Identity

The updated identity introduces a more refined and structured visual system while maintaining subtle references to the destination.

A more sophisticated typographic approach gives the brand a confident and premium presence, while restrained visual elements allow the destination imagery to remain the hero.

The result is a brand identity that feels calm, elevated, and aligned with the experience the client wished to communicate.

Website Design Direction

Alongside the brand evolution, the project included the design direction for the new Aitutaki.com website.

The website design focused on creating a calm and immersive browsing experience that allows destination imagery and curated travel experiences to take centre stage.

While the website implementation was completed by a dedicated web development team, the design direction ensured the updated brand identity carried through consistently across the digital experience.

The Outcome

Aitutaki.com now has a refined brand identity that reflects the premium travel experience it offers.

By evolving the existing brand rather than replacing it entirely, the identity retains a connection to the destination while presenting the business with a more confident and elevated presence.

The updated brand provides a strong foundation for future marketing and supports the client’s move toward a more premium market offering.

A Note on Experience

This project was completed prior to founding Poppyseed Design while working within a collaborative creative team environment.

It reflects the same considered approach to strategic brand identity that continues to guide my work today.
